The World Doesn’t Need Another UN AI Declaration. It Needs Architecture.

A diplomat will declare at Geneva next month that artificial intelligence (AI) must benefit all of humanity, setting the stage for a critical United Nations (UN) Global Dialogue on AI Governance.
The UN’s Dialogue will focus on whether the commitment to benefit humanity through AI will be followed by substantial architectural changes.
The current AI governance frameworks are concentrated in wealthy countries, powerful companies, and well-resourced research environments, leaving many countries in Asia and the Pacific struggling to keep up.
For the Dialogue to succeed, it needs to implement structural changes including follow-through, capacity-building, consideration of Global Majority expertise, and attention to catastrophic and existential risks.
Capacity-building is essential for safe, rights-respecting AI governance, particularly in regions like Southeast Asia where technical infrastructure and human expertise are lacking.
Global Majority voices and lived experiences must be integrated into AI governance to ensure comprehensive and inclusive policy-making.
There must be an inclusive space dedicated to deliberate on catastrophic and existential risks associated with AI to ensure collective oversight.
The true value of the Dialogue will be judged on the creation of inclusive mechanisms that produce practical governance, not just on declarations or participation levels.
