North Dakota Sen. David Hogue announced the formation of an interim Artificial Intelligence and Data Center Committee, expressing enthusiasm about the initiative.
-
The committee aims to address AI’s growing influence on job application, loan approval, medical treatment, education, and national security, which has prompted widespread legislative activity across states.
-
With more than 1,500 AI-related bills introduced in 45 states and over 145 enacted at the federal level in 2025, state legislators are trying to keep up with AI’s rapid developments.
-
AI and data centers create economic opportunities while presenting infrastructure challenges; the committee will focus on gathering information and reviewing regulations about AI and data centers.
-
The interim committee will also consider AI harm protections, especially for children, and examine the economic and environmental impacts of data center placements, including water and electric consumption effects.
-
The committee comprises 10 legislators and two non-legislative experts, led by Chair Rep. Johnathan Warrey and Vice Chair Sen. Kyle Davison, and plans to meet several times to compile a report and draft bills for the November Legislative Management submission.
