BUSSQ has appointed a new director to its board of trustees who specialises in cybersecurity and risk management.
Matthew Rowan has been involved in the BUSSQ board since August 2023 as an expert committee member where he provided independent advice on cyber security, technology strategy and IT risk management.
He has now been promoted to a director and will also be a member of the audit and risk committee and the member services committee.
Rising scams and cyber attacks have pushed super funds to bolster their security and digital safeguards across the retirement system as cyber resilience is viewed as a baseline expectation.
KPMG’s latest Super Insights report said the sector had experienced “co-ordinated attacks, wide-reaching credential theft, fraudulent withdrawals, and identity-based scams” over the past year, prompting urgent action from regulators and super funds alike.
The report noted that cyber resilience had become a baseline expectation across the industry as funds navigate rising digital engagement, growing member expectations and increasingly sophisticated criminal activity.
Chris Taylor, chair of the BUSSQ board of trustees, said: “On behalf of the board of trustees, I am pleased to welcome Matthew to the board . He brings valuable experience and insights in technology and cyber risk that will further strengthen the board’s skills and governance capability as we navigate an increasingly complex technical environment for our members.”
He replaced Geoff Baguley as an employer representative, following his resignation in February 2026.
Also on the board of trustees is Ben Young, Emma Eaves, Hemal Patel, Linda Vickers, Paul Hick and Paul Dunbar.
Earlier this year, BUSSQ tapped First Super chief executive Bill Watson as its new chief investment officer. Watson joined after serving around 13 years as chief executive of the paper, pulp and timber industries fund, which he joined in 2013.
AT BUSSQ, he oversees the $7.5 billion fund’s investment strategy, with a focus on delivering strong long-term outcomes for members.
