Trump warns AI could be weapon if used ‘improperly’ after blocking Anthropic models

US President Donald Trump expressed concerns over artificial intelligence (AI) potentially becoming a weapon if not properly managed, emphasizing the transformative power of AI.
President Trump mentioned an internal issue with the firm Anthropic, citing a “competitor and part owner” prompting federal officials to act, which led to the suspension of the “Fable 5” and “Mythos 5” advanced AI models to prevent “jailbreaking.”
Trump praised the response of Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei to the government intervention, acknowledging that non-compliance with such measures could incur severe penalties, despite describing AI as greater than the internet and suggesting that the benefits of AI far outweigh its risks.
He indicated that aggressive regulatory measures might not be needed if AI companies cooperate, and subtly insinuated that Anthropic might have posed a national security threat in the past.
Anthropic responded that the US government’s export control directive suspended access to its models for all foreign nationals, including its own employees, without specifying the national security concerns and noting that a technique was demonstrated to exploit minor vulnerabilities.
