Virginia Tech is introducing a new undergraduate minor in Artificial Intelligence (AI) accessible to students from any major this summer.
The program aims to equip students with AI skills and literacy applicable across various fields of study and future careers.
Applications for the minor will be open to all undergraduates starting in August, with some students able to enroll in the first classes this month.
Christine Julien, head of the Department of Computer Science, emphasizes the importance of AI literacy in nearly every profession, with the aim to ensure graduates understand AI’s operation, its evaluation, and responsible application in their fields.
The minor was designed to be inclusive, incorporating contributions from departments across the university to tailor AI education to diverse academic disciplines.
The 18-credit-hour minor includes technical, ethical, and interdisciplinary applications modules. These include courses spanning programming, computational problem-solving, AI in the arts, and ethical perspectives on AI, among others.
The interdisciplinary minor allows students to connect AI concepts to their specific academic interests and career paths, ranging from AI in music to ethical considerations in data governance.
The course offerings are set to expand with new classes being continuously reviewed and approved.
