University approves AI, digital governance task force

AI Governance Strategy Task Force: National Taiwan University (NTU) has approved the establishment of an AI and Digital Governance Strategy Task Force to tackle AI-related challenges.
Multi-Unit Participation: The task force will include representatives from different administrative and academic units, ensuring that diverse perspectives are considered in AI policymaking which aligns with student interests.
Equality in Access to AI Resources: Geography professor Chien Shiuh-shen emphasized the need to ensure equitable access to AI resources, proposing initiatives to avoid financial barriers for students.
University-Wide AI Platform: There’s a call to create a shared university-wide platform for graphics processing units (GPUs) and AI computing resources, with transparent fee systems for students and faculty.
Lagging AI Policies in Taiwan: Director Chu Hsiao-ping highlighted that while AI governance is institutionalized in only 20% of leading global universities, most Taiwanese universities are still in the exploratory phase, stressing the need for developed AI strategies tailored to their own environments.
