Meta agrees to Indian AI data center deal with Reliance Industries

Meta Platforms plans to lease a data center in India with 168 megawatts of capacity from Reliance Industries, part of a significant long-term investment in India’s economy.
Reliance Industries, led by Mukesh Ambani, will build the data center for Meta in Jamnagar; delivery is expected within two years, with an option to scale.
The partnership between Meta and Reliance dates back to 2020 when Meta invested $5.7 billion in Jio Platforms, Ambani’s telecom and digital services business.
Last year, Meta and Reliance extended their collaboration via a joint venture offering Meta’s open-source AI models to Indian enterprises and developers.
India’s data center industry is rapidly growing, with an influx of $400 billion over the past year, mainly directed towards data centers and energy infrastructure.
India’s data center capacity is expected to grow to 7 GW by 2030, driven by its cost-efficiency compared to other markets.
The Indian government offers a 20-year tax exemption for hyperscalers using data centers in the country to serve global clients.
Meta is partnering with Indian clean energy providers CleanMax and Fourth Partner Energy to supply nearly 1GW of renewable energy for its infrastructure, aligning with its goal of using 100% clean and renewable energy in all operations.
