World weather forecasting ‘completely upended’ by AI

Artificial intelligence (AI) has dramatically improved weather forecasting, according to Prof Andrew Parnell.
AI-based forecasting is estimated to be 10 to 15% more accurate and significantly more efficient than traditional methods.
The AIFS system introduced in 2022 by the Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting has outperformed traditional methods and is in daily use.
Prof Parnell noted that AI weather models have lower environmental footprints compared to large language models used in other AI applications.
There is a concern about the environmental impact of AI, especially in terms of energy consumption by data centers.
Prof Parnell highlighted that Ireland excels in data-driven AI and he hopes for continued support from the committee.
Prof Daly expressed concern that Ireland’s current energy policies could hinder efforts to meet carbon budgets due to the rapid growth of data centers.
The meeting’s chair is now TD James Geoghegan following the resignation of TD Malcolm Byrne last week due to being arrested on suspicion of drink driving.
