World’s first AI-designed vaccine explained

Researchers from the University of Cambridge have developed an innovative new type of vaccine using artificial intelligence (AI) to design its key components.
The ultimate aim of this breakthrough vaccine is to provide protection against all known human coronavirus variants and related bat viruses that could cause future pandemics.
Unlike traditional vaccines, this AI-designed vaccine targets stable genetic features across different strains of viruses, potentially offering broad protection against evolving threats.
The vaccine uses a DNA-based approach, which is more stable than mRNA, easier to store and transport, and can be administered using a needle-free delivery system.
This DNA-based, broad-spectrum vaccine has the potential to protect against not only known coronavirus strains but also against future pandemics by providing immunity to a whole virus family.
Early trials showed that the vaccine is safe and stimulates the immune system to produce antibodies capable of recognizing different sarbecovirus types.
While results from this first human trial are promising, further larger trials are necessary to assess the vaccine’s efficacy, duration of protection, and need for booster shots.
While a universal vaccine is still several years away, this study marks an important step forward in leveraging AI to develop variant-proof vaccines.
