Folly Beach considers AI system to monitor beach conditions and tourism

Folly Beach is exploring the potential use of artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance both environmental protection and tourism planning.
The city council is discussing a $76,500 investment from the beach preservation fund to deploy an AI monitoring system provided by Surfline Coastal Intelligence.
The AI system will have dual applications: monitoring beach erosion for infrastructure planning and quantifying beach usage for tourism and safety.
It will allow the city to count the number of visitors and direct them to less eroded areas, aiding in safety and preserving beach resources.
The system can help bolster arguments for state and federal funding by providing data on visitor numbers and beach health.
If adopted, the AI system will start with five monitoring cameras for a year, with plans to expand if successful.
