EU’s Strategic Roadmap for Digitalisation and Artificial Intelligence in Energy

The European Commission has introduced a Strategic Roadmap for Digitalisation and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in energy as part of the European Technological Sovereignty Package.
The initiative aims to address the growing dependency of energy systems on digital technologies while tackling rising energy prices and geopolitical challenges.
The roadmap emphasizes tech sovereignty in terms of strengthening the autonomous capacity of the EU’s energy sector and safeguarding its security.
It highlights the potential of digital solutions and AI to enhance the efficiency, cleanliness, competitiveness, and security of the EU energy system.
Digital solutions can enable consumers to shift electricity consumption to cheaper hours, leading to an annual savings of more than €71 billion and a 64% reduction in energy consumption costs.
Industry digitalisation is projected to save up to €94 billion ($110 billion) by 2035 through improved efficiency and operation optimisation.
The roadmap focuses on three main pillars: integration of data centres into the sustainable energy system, the accelerated adoption of digital and AI solutions, and establishing a framework for secure cross-border data sharing.
Additional measures include ensuring trust in AI solutions, enhancing cybersecurity of critical energy infrastructure, developing tailored digital skills, and promoting international cooperation.
