New artificial intelligence tool helps clinicians distinguish between dementia types

Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias are expected to more than double by 2060, necessitating improved diagnostic tools for clinicians.
Researchers at the University of Florida have developed a new tool named Automated Imaging Differentiation for Dementia (AIDD) to distinguish between Alzheimer’s disease dementia and dementia with Lewy bodies.
The AIDD tool combines brain scans with artificial intelligence (AI) to achieve near-perfect accuracy in identifying these two forms of dementia.
AIDD’s capability to differentiate between these dementias is significant because they require different treatments to manage their unique symptoms effectively.
The researchers conducted extensive validation experiments using extensive brain scan data from multiple scanners and imaging centers, and the AIDD tool performed well during these tests.
The AIDD scans used a specialized MRI technique to measure extra fluid in the brain that signals brain cell damage and inflammation, analyzed by AI for more accurate disease identification.
The tool performed strong in tests, including correctly identifying all cases in a group of 13 patients whose diagnoses were confirmed posthumously.
Improving diagnostic precision is crucial as treatments for Alzheimer’s disease and dementia with Lewy bodies differ considerably, offering better outcomes for patients.
