EU Tech Sovereignty Package | Inside Global Tech

The European Commission published its Tech Sovereignty Package on June 3, addressing Europe’s dependency on non-European technology suppliers.
The Package includes four key components: the Cloud and AI Development Act (CADA), the Chips Act 2.0, the EU Open Source Strategy, and a Strategic Roadmap for Digitalisation and AI in Energy.
CADA aims to enhance EU-based cloud and AI infrastructure, focusing on tripling data center capacity and establishing a EU Cloud Sovereignty Framework based on four assurance levels.
The Chips Act 2.0 seeks to reduce the EU’s reliance on third countries for semiconductor design and manufacture, emphasizing demand-side tools to stimulate local demand and considering new facilities for advanced manufacturing.
The EU Open Source Strategy aims to mitigate vendor lock-in and strengthen European digital autonomy through four main objectives: tech sovereignty, ecosystem vibrancy, public administration interoperability, and digital standards.
A Strategic Roadmap for Digitalisation and AI in Energy aims to integrate critical technology into energy sectors, with specific initiatives for energy efficiency in data centers and rating schemes for sustainability.
The Package represents the EU’s proactive approach to building internal capacity for critical technologies and may have broad implications for stakeholders across various sectors including cloud computing, semiconductors, open-source software, and energy technology.
