Wayne State research advances technology for faster, more secure internet – Today@Wayne

Dr. Rhongho Jang, assistant professor at Wayne State University’s James and Patricia Anderson College of Engineering, is pioneering research at WSU’s Big Data Research Lab to enhance internet security using artificial intelligence.
Jang has received a five-year, $599,998 CAREER award from the National Science Foundation to develop next-generation network infrastructure capable of real-time threat detection and response.
This grant supports projects that aim to integrate AI directly into core network systems to create a proactive defense model akin to a “smart immune system for the internet.”
Jang aims to embed advanced computing techniques in network routers to respond to cyber threats immediately, reducing reliance on distant servers like cloud data centers.
His research focuses on creating real-time intelligent and defensive networks that can prevent internet outages, enhance security in smart-home environments, and ensure faster and more reliable connectivity for everyday users.
Jang envisions making advanced cybersecurity protections more accessible by embedding these AI defenses into standard network systems by default.
Beyond technical innovations, Jang highlights the need for a new generation of computer scientists to redesign systems specifically for AI and to tackle the intersection of artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and internet infrastructure.
