Pope Leo presents ‘Magnifica Humanitas’ calling for disarmament of AI – Vatican – Chicago Catholic

Pope Leo XIV introduced his first social encyclical, “Magnifica Humanitas,” to appeal for artificial intelligence to be placed at the service of humanity.
He likened the current technological revolution to the industrial revolution faced by Pope Leo XIII, emphasizing the need for moral discernment and public accountability for artificial intelligence.
The pope expressed concerns regarding technologies that foster domination, exclusion, and war, including autonomous weapons and algorithms denying access to essential resources based on biased data.
He called on humanity to “disarm” artificial intelligence and free it from logics that turn it into an instrument of harm, stressing that peace is at risk when technology weakens moral vigilance.
Pope Leo XIV highlighted the need to rebuild a more just future together, drawing an analogy with his missionary experiences in Peru and biblical references to Nehemiah.
He advocated for artificial intelligence to serve human life within a horizon of communion, emphasizing that no one should be excluded from technological advancements and that humans cannot be reduced to mere data.
The pope called for cooperation among nations and all stakeholders to ensure artificial intelligence benefits all of humanity, not just a privileged few.
He invited believers and non-believers alike to become “artisans of hope” working towards a more humane and fraternal society, entrusting the initiative to the Virgin Mary.
