Anthropic unveiled Claude Mythos Preview last month, sending shockwaves through the tech industry. According to the company, the AI model was wildly adept at hacking software, despite not being designed to do so. During testing, Anthropic said Mythos found thousands of flaws in existing pieces of software, including all major web browsers and operating systems. More troubling still, Mythos can find software vulnerabilities far faster than humans can discover and patch them. “There’s just thousands of vulnerabilities that are being discovered by these models, and it’s just really hard to run around and patch everything that fast,” Cisco senior vice president and general manager of infrastructure and security Tom Gillis told Yahoo Finance. “And so having the ability to have an interim solution that you can put on a running system without disrupting the system is really a breakthrough,” he said. Designed to run on Cisco’s networking hardware, Live Protect differs from traditional security measures because cybersecurity professionals can use it to quickly implement shields without needing to take a system offline first. Instead, they toggle on a shield while their networking tools continue to operate as normal. In the cat-and-mouse game of cybersecurity, timing is incredibly important. The longer a flaw is unprotected, the more likely it is that a hacker could exploit it to break into a computer system.
