NIST expands goals for renamed AI consortium

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has rebranded the AI Safety Institute Consortium to the “Artificial Intelligence Consortium”.
The focus of the consortium has shifted from AI safety to AI measurement, innovation, and adoption.
Six “task groups” are central to the consortium’s new objectives, which include areas like measurement science, AI adoption, and bias effects.
NIST is inviting new technically capable organizations to join the consortium, though existing members do not need to reapply.
The consortium aims to develop new measurement science for AI, ensuring it protects free speech, American values, and national security.
Key areas covered by the consortium’s groups include AI testing, verification, evaluation methods, risk assessment, and secure-by-design AI technologies.
