Teachers call for balance between learning and artificial intelligence

The American Federation of Teachers (AFT) has introduced a plan named “Devices Down, Eyes Up, Hands-On: 10 Points to Boost Teaching and Learning in the AI Era” to balance the integration of technology like AI with traditional learning in schools.
The plan advocates for a complete ban on screens for students in pre-K through second grade and an end to student-facing AI in elementary schools due to concerns over the loss of critical thinking skills.
AFT President Randi Weingarten emphasizes the need for a balanced approach to harness AI’s benefits while reducing potential harms, while noting she is not calling for an outright AI ban.
The plan intends to establish a new “gold standard” for AI safety and privacy and prioritizes the well-being of students and families.
Weingarten criticized the Trump administration’s policies, alleging they favor Big Tech and private donors over the needs of public schools, and stressed the importance of collaborative problem-solving skills in preparing students for future challenges.
