Maine enlists AI to help combat rising home insurance rates

Maine is addressing the escalating impacts of climate change, with rising sea levels and extreme temperatures leading to more severe natural disasters.
The Maine Bureau of Insurance has introduced a grant program called Fortify Maine Homes to support homeowners in making their properties more resilient against climate-related disasters.
The grant program aims to partially finance roof repairs and offers up to $15,000 per eligible applicant, amidst a 23% increase in homeowners insurance premiums.
To manage and accelerate the application process, the program will utilize an online platform developed by Forerunner, which incorporates artificial intelligence for streamlined communication and decision-making.
Artificial intelligence will assist in reviewing applications, verifying data accuracy, and monitoring construction project progress to enhance efficiency.
The first phase of the program will be piloted in four counties with high insurance claim costs, starting with an application period opening in June.
In future stages, the program intends to expand coverage to include flood mitigation projects like drain installation and home foundation repairs.
The overall goal of the program is to demonstrate a return on investment for the state through reduced insurance claims and increased property investments.
