A new University of Florida case study titled “Building an AI University: From Infrastructure Gift to Systemic Transformation” explores the transformation from a major investment in AI infrastructure to a university-wide AI initiative.
The initiative, centered around HiPerGator AI supercomputer, grew to encompass teaching, research, workforce development, and statewide access to advanced computing.
The study attributes the transformation to an $85 million investment that included contributions from NVIDIA, the University of Florida, and the State of Florida, leading to extensive AI infrastructure improvements.
By 2025, UF had expanded to more than 230 AI courses across all colleges, involving over 300 faculty members and 14,000 students, along with a new university-wide AI certificate program.
The case emphasizes the importance of executive alignment, faculty engagement, and infrastructure for student learning beyond just AI infrastructure.
UF’s “AI Across the Curriculum” model aims to integrate AI instruction across all disciplines and reflects a broader approach to AI as a university-wide capability.
The case suggests UF’s model as a possible template for other institutions and is part of a broader initiative led by Chris Malachowsky to develop nationwide AI resources.
The case is inaugural in the new Warrington Case Series, expected to be followed by additional micro cases exploring UF’s leadership structure in its AI initiative.
