The Mount’s BS in Cybersecurity program meets the National Security Agency (NSA) Program of Study requirements
Mount St. Mary’s University was granted a Program of Study (POS) validation by the National Security Agency (NSA) after meeting the NSA’s rigorous requirements. In an effort to create a collaborative cybersecurity educational program in the United States, the NSA has colleges and universities meet the following requirements: academic excellence in cybersecurity, competency development among faculty and staff, community outreach and professional development, cybersecurity practices instituted across multiple academic disciplines, and for institutions to actively engage in solutions to challenges facing cybersecurity education.
Mount St. Mary’s University has a thriving cybersecurity program that offers students and faculty numerous professional development opportunities to deepen their knowledge of cybersecurity. Through the Cybersecurity Defense Club (CDC), members not only attend conferences and competitions but also collaborate with peers, testing their skills and abilities. Students additionally have the opportunity to work in the Mount’s Security Operations Center (SOC) as Analysts alongside professional IT staff. Notably, the SOC itself was developed by Undergraduate IT student workers as a pathway for students to gain early‑career experience, applying industry tools and methodologies in a real‑world context.

To ensure the Cybersecurity program remains aligned with current workforce and industry needs, Mount St. Mary’s maintains an Active Industry Panel composed of practicing industry professionals. Throughout the academic year, guest speakers are invited to deliver SmallTalks, offering professional insights and opportunities for questions and discussion.
Mount students also present research in their respective fields at the annual SPARC Festival each Spring. In cybersecurity, this past Spring’s presentations addressed incident response, AI‑Driven Cyber Threats, Ethics and Security in the Era of AI, and the growing need to shift toward memory‑safe programming languages. With the rapid changes occurring across the industry, Mount St. Mary’s University is well‑equipped to meet the challenge of educating a new generation in cybersecurity.
With the NSA granting the University a POS validation, the Mount continues to rise to meet the needs of both the industry and the workforce.
