The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) is providing guidance for local school districts on using artificial intelligence (AI) in classrooms.
MDE officials emphasized the potential of AI as a teaching tool when used properly and introduced recently released AI guidance resources.
State Superintendent Dr. Glenn Maleyko stressed the importance of educators and students understanding AI’s appropriate use.
The guidance focuses on five essential practices: maintaining AI purpose and safety, protecting privacy and maintaining integrity, building AI literacy, sustaining human oversight, and ensuring equity and accessibility.
Delsa Chapman, deputy superintendent for the MDE Division of Assessment, highlighted that the guide offers practical examples and templates to establish AI use guardrails.
MDE encourages districts to start or continue conversations about AI tool implementation and promises ongoing support with quality resources as they become available.
