Musk AI Expansion Sparks Environmental Battle

NAACP and environmental justice groups are suing Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company xAI for pollution allegedly resulting from an expanding AI power plant fueled by unpermitted gas turbines near Memphis.
The power plant, which includes t Colossus 1 and Colossus 2 supercomputers that train the AI chatbot Grok, has added six new gas-powered turbines, increasing the total to 33 and intensifying air pollution complaints.
The turbines are located near Southaven, Mississippi, and Boxtown, Memphis, both of which are predominantly Black communities. Civil rights advocates claim these additional turbines exacerbate health risks to these communities.
The Southern Environmental Law Center has urged a federal court to shut down the gas turbines to prevent ongoing pollution and alleged violations of the Clean Air Act.
Abre’ Conner, NAACP’s director of environmental and climate justice, emphasized the need to protect communities from harmful pollution and stressed that laws are not to be treated as suggestions.
