Georgia Passes Artificial Intelligence Companion Law

Georgia is adopting a stringent AI companion law effective July 1, 2027, aimed at regulating natural-language AI systems that engage in sustained, personal interactions with users.
The law applies to AI companions that retain session information, ask emotion-based questions unprompted, and engage in ongoing personal conversations. It excludes internal business support, customer service chatbots, and video game chatbots, provided they do not establish emotional attachments or companionship.
For in-scope chatbots, there are disclosure requirements: informing users they are interacting with AI at every three hours (every hour for minors).
Companies must implement protection measures for users, including referrals to crisis resources and disclosures about these measures on their websites. Chatbots must also not portray themselves as licensed healthcare providers.
Special requirements protect minors, including giving parents control over their children’s chatbot interactions and preventing the chatbot from prompting minors for companionship or excessive praise.
There is no private right of action; the Georgia Attorney General will enforce the law, with the authority to provide a 30-day cure period and to issue rules and guidance.
Companies should assess whether their chatbots fall under the law and test their functionality to ensure compliance.
