Meta slashes 8,000 jobs as it pivots towards AI : NPR

Meta initiates a major reorganization plan aimed at shifting resources and personnel towards artificial intelligence (AI).
The company plans to lay off around 10% of its workforce (approximately 8,000 employees) and has notified the affected employees.
In addition to layoffs, an additional 7,000 employees will have their roles altered to focus more on AI projects.
As a part of the reorganization, these 7,000 employees will be reassigned to four new teams dedicated to developing AI tools and applications.
The reorganization reflects Meta’s significant investment in AI, competing with companies like Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic in the AI race.
This move comes amid a challenging period for Meta, which includes reduced focus on the virtual reality “Metaverse” and legal battles regarding the impact of its platforms on children’s mental health.
