Artificial Intelligence Aids Diagnosis of ADHD: New Study

A study published in Nature Mental Health reveals that AI can predict a child’s risk of ADHD with 92% accuracy using electronic health records (EHRs) available at age 5, allowing for diagnosis before typical evaluations.
The study’s authors suggest that these EHR-based predictive models could assist providers in making timely diagnoses, which are crucial due to demographic and clinical disparities.
Another study in JAMA Psychiatry found that children diagnosed with ADHD at earlier ages have higher GPAs and lower high school dropout rates.
Those diagnosed early (ages 4-6) had significantly higher GPAs (0.6 to 0.7 points higher on a 10-point scale) compared to those diagnosed in mid-adolescence (ages 14-16) and were three times less likely to drop out of high school.
Experts like Adelaide S. Robb and Greg Mattingly emphasize that early treatment of ADHD provides long-term benefits, including better academic performance, reduced likelihood of developing comorbidities, and positive outcomes in higher education, employment, and quality of life.
