Pope approves creation of interdicasterial commission on AI

Pope Leo XIV approved the establishment of an Interdicasterial Commission on Artificial Intelligence on May 16, coordinating the effort through Cardinal Michael Czerny.
The commission addresses the impact of AI on human dignity and integral development, responding to its growing significance and use.
It includes representatives from seven Vatican bodies such as the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development and the Pontifical Academy for Life.
Each Vatican body will alternate one-year terms of coordination for the commission, with the pope determining the lead body.
Cardinal Czerny formed the commission as per Article 28 of the Apostolic Constitution “Praedicate Evangelium,” highlighting its role in facilitating collaboration across multiple dicasteries.
This initiative follows other collaborative efforts among Vatican dicasteries, like the January 2025 doctrinal note on AI.
Pope Leo XIV has consistently addressed AI and other technological advancements during his pontificate, emphasizing human dignity in the face of these challenges.
