Pope approves creation of commission on AI

Pope Leo XIV approved the creation of an Interdicasterial Commission on Artificial Intelligence on 16 May, with a document signed by Cardinal Michael Czerny.
The establishment followed the Pope’s consideration of the advancements and increasing use of Artificial Intelligence and its effects on humanity.
The commission is coordinated by the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development initially and will rotate coordination among seven Vatican bodies.
Representatives from various Vatican departments will collaborate to promote dialogue and policies related to Artificial Intelligence.
Cardinal Czerny established the commission according to Article 28 of the Apostolic Constitution Praedicate evangelium for matters requiring consultation from multiple dicasteries.
This initiative reflects ongoing concerns under Pope Leo XIV’s pontificate regarding the implications of Artificial Intelligence for human dignity, justice, and labour, as seen in previous discussions and teachings.
