Vatican Sets Up Commission on Artificial Intelligence| National Catholic Register

Pope Leo XIV has approved the establishment of a new Vatican commission on artificial intelligence to manage the Holy See’s response to AI’s rapid growth and implications.
The commission is expected to focus on the ethical, social, and economic consequences of artificial intelligence.
The creation of the commission coincides with preparations for Pope Leo XIV’s first encyclical, which is anticipated to extensively cover AI and its moral, social, and economic questions.
The encyclical is likely to frame AI in the context of human dignity and integral human development, akin to historical papal documents addressing major societal changes.
The new commission will include representatives from various Vatican dicasteries and Pontifical Academies, ensuring a broad scope of expertise.
Coordination of the commission will initially be entrusted to the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development on a renewable annual basis, overseen by the Pope.
Pope Leo XIV has emphasized the global challenges posed by artificial intelligence throughout his papacy, highlighting its impact on human dignity, justice, and labor.
The commission aims to facilitate collaboration and dialogue among its members and institutions to manage the Holy See’s internal use of AI.
