Vatican sets up commission on artificial intelligence

Pope Leo XIV has approved the creation of a new Vatican commission on artificial intelligence (AI) to address its implications for human dignity, integral development, and the Church’s internal use of AI.

This new commission follows an audience with Cardinal Michael Czerny, prefect of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development.
The commission will involve representatives from major Vatican institutions and will coordinate its activities through the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development for an initial year.
The commission’s role includes facilitating collaboration, promoting dialogue, and governing AI’s use within the Holy See, alongside the defense of human dignity and integral development.
Pope Leo XIV has emphasized the global challenges posed by AI since the beginning of his pontificate, drawing parallels to the moral questions of the Industrial Revolution.
