Senate Democrats introduce bills to regulate artificial intelligence

Illinois Senate Democrats introduced an eight-bill package aimed at regulating artificial intelligence (AI) use due to a lack of federal policy.
The bills cover consumer protection, chatbot transparency, and the use of AI in schools, modeled after legislation in California and New York.
Despite concerns from industry advocates about creating a “patchwork environment,” Illinois lawmakers are pushing for state-led regulation as Congress has done little.
Key bills include requiring transparency from large AI developers, regulations for chatbots to address mental health issues, and prohibitions against bots from monopolizing ticket sales and AI-driven collusion on rental prices.
The legislature is also moving to regulate the use of AI in classrooms, aiming to prevent AI from grading students and requiring the use of AI in student-related work to be approved by school boards.
The package has garnered significant bipartisan support, although some technical amendments are expected before final votes.
