AI expert from U of I weighs in on regulating artificial intelligence in the state

The Illinois Senate is considering a new package of bills aimed at regulating the growing Artificial Intelligence (AI) industry.
Proposed regulations include a ban on teachers using AI to grade students’ work, which has been met with mixed opinions from experts.
Volodymyr Kindratenko, Director at the Center for Artificial Intelligence Innovation at the University of Illinois, supports partial regulation of AI to safeguard the general population, especially children.
Kindratenko believes regulating AI is akin to how heavily regulated industries like pharmaceuticals and air travel are managed for public safety.
He is concerned that a complete ban on teachers using AI for grading might not be necessary, as AI can alleviate challenges in providing objective assessments and free up teachers’ time for other important tasks.
Kindratenko also highlighted that the regulation could potentially stifle innovation and be hard to enforce due to the widespread use of AI.
