From caws to code: AI helps decrypt animal communication

Scientists are using artificial intelligence (AI) models from the Earth Species Project (ESP) to decode animal communications across various species, including crows and orcas.
Researchers Vittorio Baglione and Daniela Canestrari, in collaboration with ESP, are analyzing carrion crow calls in northern Spain to understand the communication involved in their unique cooperative-breeding behavior.
With AI, scientists have detected over 127,000 vocalizations from crows, distinguishing between adult and baby crows, as well as calls from other bird species.
The ESP is also collaborating with scientists in Canada to understand the communication patterns of orcas, focusing on how underwater noise affects their interactions and movements.
AI models are speeding up data analysis for both terrestrial and marine animals, aiding in the synchronization of data from various sources and aiding in behavioral pattern identification.
