UN calls for AI, emerging tech to support better city, community life

The Third UN Virtual World Day convened by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) emphasized the importance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital innovation for future city living.
With urbanization predicted to house 70% of the world’s population in urban areas by 2050, the event focused on the “AI-enabled citiverse” to enhance urban planning and quality of life.
The participants launched a “Call to Action for Humanity” outlining five strategic priorities: localizing global commitments, developing trustworthy AI systems, improving decision-making with data, enabling responsible economic and social growth, and enhancing international cooperation.
The call and accompanying executive briefing highlighted both the potential benefits of AI in city life and the challenges such as governance gaps, trust concerns, and digital divides.
The initiative seeks to ensure that the advantages of AI and the “citiverse” reach all communities, especially developing economies and underserved populations.
