Marine Corps requiring ‘Basic AI’ training course for all troops

All active-duty Marines and reservists must complete the new Basic AI Course before the end of the year as of a May 8 MARADMIN message announcement.
The Marine Corps and the Defense Department are pushing for a faster adoption of artificial intelligence capabilities across warfighting and administrative functions.
The AI implementation plan aims to develop an “AI competent workforce,” with a strategic focus on AI as a disruptive technology that could provide a decisive advantage as well as potential risks if adversaries exploit it more effectively.
The Marine Corps is establishing a “broad educational framework” to ensure AI-trained Marines are supported by informed peers and leaders, fostering a culture of innovation and ethical AI use in operational environments.
The Basic AI Course is designed to provide foundational knowledge of AI, including its use cases and principles, and will take about 45 minutes upon completion through the MCELE system.
New personnel must finish the course within 12 months of completing their entry-level training, but it’s not mandatory for Marine Corps civilian employees, though strongly encouraged.
