British class society Lloyd’s Register (LR) has launched a research collaboration with connectivity and cybersecurity specialist Marlink to study how the maritime industry can manage the growing complexity of digital systems on board ships.

Marlink has joined LR’s Digital Transformation Research Programme, with the partnership initially focused on cybersecurity, connectivity and the integration of digital systems as vessels become more data‑driven and connected. The work will examine how responsibilities are shared between shipowners, system integrators and class societies, and how those roles are evolving as regulatory expectations and operational models change.

The research will draw on real‑world experience from a leading shipowner engaged in a newbuilding programme, examining how digital requirements are defined, implemented, and managed from design and construction through to vessel operation and eventual recycling.

The project also builds on insights from LR’s Digital Maturity Index, which now includes assessments from more than 50 shipping companies and shows that connectivity and cybersecurity are among the more mature digital areas, albeit with clear gaps between ambition and execution.

“The initial findings from our Digital Maturity Index highlight that cybersecurity and connectivity are gaining ground, supporting maritime’s digital journey, yet their full potential is still untapped. By working together, we can deliver valuable insights that help shipowners and operators navigate the complexities of digital transformation more effectively and securely,” said Mark Warner, client marketing director at Lloyd’s Register.

“As vessels become increasingly software‑defined and connected, the maritime industry faces growing challenges across often highly fragmented digital ecosystems. Through this collaboration with LR, Marlink brings decades of practical insight from managing complex maritime IT, network, and cyber environments at scale,” added Tore Morten Olsen, president of maritime at Marlink.
