Parent sues Palo Alto school district over AI procedures

A parent in the Palo Alto Unified School District is suing the district for falsely accusing his son of using AI to write an essay, leading to a grade penalty.
The teacher used Turnitin, an AI detection tool, which flagged 76% of the essay as AI-generated. The student was required to rewrite the essay in class.
The rewrite resulted in a drop in the final grade from a C to a D, which the family believes was unfair and arbitrary.
The parent is demanding a grade reversal, removal of the allegation from the student’s record, and an end to the in-person retake practice.
The lawsuit also alleges discrimination against his son as a multilingual Asian male, bias in AI detection tools, and improper grading procedures.
The school district has yet to respond to the lawsuit and has not established clear policies on AI use in student work.
A case management conference is scheduled for August 6 to address the allegations.
