Arkansas State University is launching a student-operated cybersecurity program this fall through a partnership with Kalmer Solutions.
The new Red Wolf Security Operations Center will allow students to monitor cybersecurity threats, identify vulnerabilities and help protect university networks through real-world training experiences.
University officials say six students each semester will work scheduled shifts as part of the program, gaining hands-on experience in cybersecurity operations.
This is about creating an opportunity for the students to not only have their academic and the theory side of computer science or whatever their major may be, but also to create those real-world application skills, said Chris Boothman.
Under the agreement, Kalmer Solutions will provide mentorship, training and operational support for the program. The company will also help fund a full-time coordinator position and graduate assistant stipends.
In addition to monitoring network security, students will participate in professional development opportunities, workshops and research projects involving areas such as automation and artificial intelligence in cybersecurity.
University officials say the program is expected to expand over time and could eventually grow throughout the Arkansas State University System.
