ICON, the University of Iowa’s Instructure online coursework program, is operating for students and faculty as of the late evening of May 7.
Earlier in the day, the site was inaccessible due to a message on the homepage from a hacking organization called ShinyHunters.
According to reporting by The Associated Press, approximately 9,000 schools worldwide had their Canvas and Instructure product usage disrupted by the hack.

The University of Iowa posted a message to ICON at 11:46 p.m. on May 7 informing students that the site was up and running again. Some functions, however, such as the site’s connection with Microsoft Office 365, are still under maintenance.
The University of Iowa Information Technology Services also included a brief note in the message assuring students and faculty that they were going to continue addressing the issue.
“ITS is continuing to monitor the situation and is working with the vendor to restore full service in a safe and secure manner,” the message said. “We will provide additional information on Friday (5/8) morning.”
In an email sent to students at 10:51 a.m. on May 8, the University of Iowa’s Executive Vice President and Provost Kevin Kregel and Associate Vice President and Chief Information Officer Brad Rohrer expressed their gratitude to students and faculty for their patience. The email also reiterated the same news in the ICON message from the night before.

The email also said to download any course materials on ICON for assignments or finals exams if needed.
Instructure is still investigating the nature and effects of the hack.
Tricia Brown, UI senior director of internal communications, said the university is still investigating if any data has been compromised and that the most up-to-date information the university possesses has been shared with students and faculty.
