SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The Lake Tahoe Unified School District is asking students and staff to remain alert following a cybersecurity incident involving a learning platform the district uses.
According to an alert the district sent on May 7, Instructure, the company that provides a learning management system called Canvas, identified unauthorized access to certain Canvas systems.

“At this time, Instructure states there is no evidence that passwords, dates of birth, government ID numbers or financial information were affected,” the announcement says.
Instructure reports that the breach began on April 25 and that the issues were resolved as of May 6. It has taken steps in response, including disabling compromised accounts, fixing identified vulnerabilities, rotating security keys, increasing system monitoring and engaging cybersecurity experts.
According to the announcement, Canvas remains operational, and Instructure continues to monitor the situation.
The school district says to remain alert to suspicious emails or messages that request personal information or direct users to unfamiliar links. Further, the district says to verify unexpected requests before responding or clicking.
