The American Nurses Association (ANA) held its inaugural AI in Nursing Practice Think Tank on April 22, 2026, to discuss the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into nursing practices.
-
The Think Tank concluded with a consensus report highlighting significant risks associated with AI in nursing, including concerns over erosion of professional judgment, unclear accountability for AI-influenced care decisions, algorithmic bias, increased cognitive burden, and the lack of nursing-specific governance standards for AI tools.
-
Key areas of risk identified were:
- Erosion of Professional Judgment
- Unclear Accountability and Liability
- Algorithmic Bias
- Increased Cognitive Load
- Lack of Nursing-specific Governance and Standards
-
The report proposed five near-term actions to address these risks: establishing nurse-led guardrails, creating a nursing AI playbook, advancing AI literacy, strengthening policy and regulatory advocacy, and fostering robust cross-sector collaboration.
-
Brad Goettl, Chief Nursing Officer of the American Nurses Enterprise, emphasized the need for deliberate, nurse-led action to safeguard patient safety, ensure nurse well-being, and maintain public trust.
