Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro’s administration has filed a lawsuit against Character.AI for allegedly misrepresenting one of its AI chatbots as a licensed medical professional.
The Pennsylvania Department of State is seeking a preliminary injunction to stop the company from claiming that its bots can provide medical advice.
This lawsuit is the first enforcement action linked to the Department’s investigation into AI companion bots practicing medicine without a license in Pennsylvania.
It’s also the first enforcement action of its kind announced by a U.S. governor, according to Shapiro’s office.
The investigation revealed that Character.AI’s chatbots falsely claimed to be licensed medical professionals available for conversations about mental health, including providing erroneous, invalid licensing information.
