Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro’s administration has filed a lawsuit against Character.AI for alleged illegal misrepresentation of its chatbots as licensed medical professionals.
The lawsuit aims to stop Character.AI from claiming its bots can provide medical advice and to stop the practice of portraying them as medical professionals.
This action marks the first enforcement action related to an investigation into AI companion bots engaging in unlicensed medical practice in Pennsylvania.
It is the first such enforcement action of its kind announced by a U.S. governor.
The Pennsylvania Department of State investigation found that Character.AI’s chatbots falsely claimed to be licensed medical professionals, including psychiatrists, and engaged users in mental health discussions.
One chatbot allegedly claimed to have a valid Pennsylvania medical license but provided an invalid license number.
