Alabama Names Its First Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer

Alabama has appointed its first-ever state Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer (CAIO), Aaron Wright, to enhance coordination of AI across government agencies.
Wright, with over 25 years of experience in technology and government, believes AI is no longer future-facing but is now deeply embedded in daily operations across all sectors.
The CAIO position, initially focusing on fostering a collaborative environment, aims to standardize AI use, enhance security, and improve efficiency in government services.
Wright’s role will facilitate coordination without stifling innovation, with a particular emphasis on creating a unified approach to AI implementation across the state.
The initial projects include a generative AI chatbot to enhance information access on the Alabama Office of Information Technology (OIT) website.
The creation of the CAIO role reflects broader state efforts to responsibly leverage AI for government modernization, aligning with previous recommendations from the Generative AI Task Force.
Residents are expected to benefit from gradual improvements such as faster service, shortened wait times, and better digital experiences as the state integrates AI into its operations.
