BCSO to use AI language translation on body-worn cameras

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar announced the implementation of Axon body cameras equipped with the Translate Assistant feature to facilitate communication between deputies and people who do not speak English.
The Translate Assistant incorporates artificial intelligence to automatically detect and translate over 60 languages, reducing the time needed for communication compared to traditional methods.
Deputies can select or have the camera identify the required language, speak into the camera, and receive translated outputs with a minor delay.
Initial training was provided to patrol deputies, who are the most frequent ones to interact with non-English speaking individuals, but the AI features will eventually be standard for all deputies.
The sheriff’s office aims for better communication, especially in urgent situations like human smuggling cases, to understand and assist victims more effectively.
AI technology will eventually be used to determine the monetary value of damaged items automatically, enhancing deputies’ efficiency in reporting such damages.
Deputies can also reference sheriff’s office policies via the bodycam, eliminating the need to consult physical manuals.
