Carnegie Mellon Launches Physical AI Research Institute

Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) and Fujitsu collaborate to establish the Fujitsu-Carnegie Mellon Physical AI Research Center within the Robotics Innovation Center in Pittsburgh.
The center aims to develop physical AI systems that incorporate AI capabilities within physical systems, such as robots.
The focus is on generating tangible improvements in productivity, mitigating labor shortages, and boosting safety across various industries including manufacturing, logistics, construction, infrastructure, and healthcare.
Interest in physical AI is surging due to its applications in enhancing efficiency and safety, though challenges like supply chain gaps, limited collaboration, and lack of standardization still exist.
Researchers from different fields at CMU, including robotics, language technologies, engineering, machine learning, and philosophy, will work with Fujitsu experts to innovate physical AI systems and address real-world challenges.
The center’s goal is to drive the societal implementation of reliable physical AI through AI, computing, networking, and robotics convergence.
The initiative builds on CMU’s past work in AI, including the $10 million investment by the Bank of New York Mellon for an AI Lab and the introduction of an AI learning resource known as Learnvia.
