New York Transit Provider Eyes AI, Hybrid-Electric Vehicles

Frank Annicaro, the new CEO of the Capital District Transportation Authority (CDTA), presented his vision for the transit authority in his first State of CDTA address, including plans for enhanced services and new technology.
CDTA is focused on incorporating hybrid-electric vehicles into its fleet over the next two years, funded in part by a $32 million grant from the Federal Transit Administration.
The authority is exploring opportunities to expand its FLEX On Demand microtransit service and potential redevelopment plans for the Daily Gazette building in Schenectady.
CDTA is also initiating climate goals, including replacing diesel buses with hybrid-electric ones, reducing emissions and creating green zones.
CDTA is testing the use of artificial intelligence in identifying shelter maintenance needs through AI-enabled cameras.
CDTA’s ridership has increased substantially, particularly in its STAR and CDPHP Cycle! services.
The agency faces financial uncertainty because it heavily relies on state operating assistance; the future budget and any additional funds remain uncertain.
Annucaro emphasized the importance of listening to employees and customers to deliver results that benefit the communities they serve.
