Seoul: Religious women reflect on AI ethics and faith

- A special lecture on artificial intelligence (AI) ethics was held at Jeongdong Franciscan Church Cathedral in Seoul, South Korea on February 24.
- The lecture, titled “Faith in the Face of Technology: AI Ethics,” was delivered by Fr. James Bank Jong-woo, a professor at the Catholic University of Korea, and about 250 people attended, many of them being women religious.
- Fr. James emphasized the necessity to use AI carefully and responsibly as it increasingly mimics human communication and interaction.
- He highlighted ethical concerns and risks posed by AI, drawing an example from the tragic suicide case of a teenager interacting with an AI chatbot, stressing the need for ethical reflection in AI development and usage.
- Sister Jung Yun-jin spoke about the importance of deeper spiritual awareness in response to rapid technological developments and how the Gospel message should be communicated today.
- The lecture also underscored technology’s role in serving humanity and contributing to the common good as per Church teachings, while stressing the need to safeguard human dignity and freedom.
