Europe House hosts discussion on the use of artificial intelligence in newsrooms and media ethics

Europe House organised an event titled “Journalism and Technology: How is AI changing newsrooms?” that drew journalists, media professionals, students, and experts.
The event featured an interactive workshop led by Ivan Fischer, specialising in AI and media, focusing on AI’s role in journalism tasks while stressing ethical standards.
Ferdinand Koenig from the European Union emphasized the need for AI to support fundamental rights, democratic values, and ensure that innovation in AI goes hand-in-hand with trust in journalism.
The workshop discussed AI’s potential benefits, such as aiding in data analysis and content creation, while also addressing concerns about its accuracy and accountability in journalism.
Ivan Fischer highlighted that while AI should assist journalists, it should not replace core journalism skills like reporting and fact-checking to ensure journalists remain skilled and accountable.
The panel discussion examined AI’s impact on the production, verification, and distribution of information, focusing on efficient workflows and innovative storytelling while highlighting the risks of bias, copyright issues, and disinformation.
The importance of using AI responsibly was underscored to safeguard freedom of expression, media independence, and democratic accountability.
