A California watchdog group, the Little Hoover Commission, released a report urging policymakers to address the growth of California’s data-center industry to prevent electricity from AI technologies from inflating consumers’ bills.

The anticipated growth in electricity demand from data centers could require billions in new infrastructure. The report suggests large data centers should pay for the infrastructure and services they require, through a special electricity rate category for extremely large power users.
The report highlights the environmental impacts of data centers, noting the increased carbon emissions and local pollution from backup diesel generators and stressing the need for cleaner alternative power and tighter environmental regulations.
The call for regulations comes as lawmakers in Sacramento prepare proposals to manage the fast-growing industry, similar to stalled efforts last year.
